Reagan cites Cuban Soviet buildup in Nicaragua
The Reagan administration publicized aerial photos and intelligence claiming a large Cuban and Soviet military buildup in Nicaragua. CIA official Inman said 6,050 Cubans including 2,000 military personnel and 50 to 70 Soviet advisers are present, with Nicaragua fielding 25,000 to 30,000 troops. The briefing warned of 50–75 Soviet jet fighters and stressed concern over the expansion beyond defensive needs.
