In plain terms heredity matters less than habits. A three pack a day smoker faces real health risk, quit advised. A AMA news conference notes smoking doubles risk of fatal heart disease vs cancer, worse with hypertension cholesterol diabetes or combined risks.
The article recalls a tense three notrump battle where South faced a ruthless spade lead and a sequence of defensive plays that doomed the contract. It notes the emotional toll of key hands in major championships and cites player Bob Lapsitz as a local example.
In a bridge game from Va I played against West who made the only defensive move to stop the contract. He cashed clubs Ace then shifted to a low heart.
