Electronic Social Security payments go electronic nationwide

Washington officials say electronic deposits of Social Security checks will roll out nationwide by year end after a Georgia start. The system, optional for recipients, deposits funds directly into checking or savings accounts via a Treasury tape. In Georgia 52,000 recipients used the system, about 75 percent of those eligible, with no late or missing receipts reported. Florida will start in April with about 360,000 participants, roughly 25 percent of eligible. Treasury aims for about 40 percent of federal payments to be electronic by decade’s end.
