U S officials report new mass graves found after the Hue fighting. They say at least 485 civilians were executed during the 25 day battle as 3,332 civilians remain missing. Casualties at Khe Sanh described as light despite heavy base attacks on the surrounding area.
Elyria High School hosts Science Days with five categories biology general science physics chemistry and math. About 500 visitors attend as students from Elyria and nearby schools display devices from gasoline distillation to psychedelic electronics. Winners receive 50 dollar savings bonds and gold rosettes while all exhibitors get certificates.
The Chronicle Telegram begins a series explaining the city income tax set to take effect July 1 in Elyria. The tax will affect all residents and workers in the city along with local businesses. The council plans to vote March 18 on the ordinance, and the paper outlines who pays who does not and the tax administrator’s powers.
After seven weeks of debate the Senate forged a civil rights bill ready for final passage. It would outlaw discrimination in sale or rental of most housing, with full effect by Jan 1, 1970, and extend Bull of Rights protections to American Indians. Key sponsors credited for open housing provisions include Hart Kravits Mondale Brooke.
Spec. Brian Murray, 21, of Lorain Ohio, died when the helicopter he was gunner on was hit by mortar fire on takeoff near Phong Vinh. Murray, a 1965 St Mary High School graduate and former electrician, volunteered for Vietnam duty in 1967 and was to be discharged Feb 22 but delayed by a dog bite. He leaves parents Mr and Mrs John Murray and sister Brenda. Service plans incomplete.
Announcement states Robert Tomazin 38 currently Lorain County appointment follows Harold Dalrymple’s death. Tomazin is Trumbull County game protector and would oversee Lorain Medina and Cuyahoga counties. He and wife Doris have three children and may base in a farm house near West and Whitney Roads.
At least six people died and seven more were hospitalized after a blaze tore through a four story apartment building in Meriden named Heritage House. Fire officials say elderly residents lowered bedsheets from windows in a last escape attempt.

About 12,000 homes in South Amherst and surrounding communities lost electricity for up to 2 hours and 45 minutes after an insulator on a South Amherst line was damaged by gunfire. Power was restored by 3:40 am as Ohio Edison blamed damp weather for the fault and noted similar incidents in the area last year. The blackout hit during strong wind and rain in Lorain County.

Lorain County commissioners learned bids for the Lorain County School for Retarded are about 70 000 higher due to federal rules on minority employment in construction. Warren Finkel, architect, said a full cost figure would follow after his review of 14 bids and alternates. The project, funded by a 318 000 federal grant and a 1 181 211 county levy, aims for a total around 15 million with site work and architect fees. Bids previously opened eight months ago were withdrawn after bidder disputes over affirmative action requirements.
Hinckley leaders consider how an extra day in leap year might disrupt the annual buzzard watchers event. Buzzard Day remains scheduled for March 17 with the birds set to arrive around March 15 as experts anticipate, while police wear patches featuring three buzzards in flight.
