Testimony on Korea ammunition shortages cited as disturbing

Gen. James A. Van Fleet told the Senate Armed Services Committee of serious ammunition shortages in Korea. Sen. Richard B. Russell called the testimony disturbing and the panel summoned Gen. J. Lawton Collins to testify Tuesday while Gen. Omar N. Bradley may testify after an overseas trip. The Appropriations Committee also seeks closed hearings as it weighs defense funding.

Two Girls Narrowly Avoid Serious Injury

Eight year old Pamela Myers and her friend Pamela Brubaker escaped serious harm when they ran across a Lake Avenue and Lod Street intersection against the traffic light. Brubaker jumped back, fell to the curb. Myers received a small ankle abrasion and was taken home by her father and officers.

Reports Demand Growing For Skilled Men In Early 1953

Richard Stith of the Lorain County Industrial Council said the first two months of 1953 show steady employment with a clear rise in demand for skilled and semi skilled labor. He noted possible seasonal slackening in some sectors, but expects employment to rebound this spring as plants with defense contracts continue full production.

Cleveland Pastor to Preach at Union Lenten Service

The Rev Harry Bertrand Taylor of the Church of the Covenant Cleveland will preach at Elyria Sunday evening union Lenten service titled at eight o clock in the First Methodist Church. He has led church and community work in Syracuse and New York and now serves as trustee of Western Reserve University and Cleveland Presbytery. Joining him for the service are the Rev Byron Kenneth Anthony Rev C R Boyd and Rev Wallace Aker from local churches with a combined choir from St Pauls Evangelical and Reformed and Lake Avenue Congregational Church providing music.

Allison Named Envoy To Japan

President Eisenhower nominated John M. Allison, assistant secretary of state for Far Eastern affairs, to be ambassador to Japan. Allison will replace Robert D. Murphy, who will move to be assistant secretary of state for United Nations affairs.

Adenauer and Mayer to Visit the United States

The White House said German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and French Prime Minister Rene Mayer will visit in March and April for world defense talks. Two Toledo postal inspectors opened an inquiry into the death by self-inflicted action of Defiance Postmaster Emmett L. Partee aged 59. Partee had announced his resignation to take effect March 31.

Decontrol Cost To Average Family Seen

Washington officials estimate the price decontrol program will cost the average American about twenty dollars per year. Over the next year price increases on already decontrolled items could reach nearly one billion dollars, roughly half a percent of 1952 retail sales. Leading retailers attending the American Retail Federation meeting expect little to no rise due to the decontrol order. Remaining decontrolled items include coffee beer hot water heaters garbage disposal units hardware and home heating fuel oil mainly in the northeast.

Stalin Lies In State In Moscow Hall For Funeral

Millions crowded the Trade Union Building in central Moscow to view Josef Stalin as his body lay in state in a catafalque in the Hall of Columns. Guards stood in full dress as military bands played funeral music, and the public filed past the bier in sub zero cold. Spencer Merchant Dies After 39 Years as Storekeeper

Spencer resident Norris J. Waller, 83, died at Lodi Hospital after weeks of illness. Truck Driver Dies in Tractor Trailer Collision Fire

Raymond Nelson, 33, of Detroit Michigan, died after his tractor saler crashed with a second tractor trailer and an auto near the Ohio Michigan border. He was trapped in the cab as flames engulfed the vehicle. The incident occurred Thursday night and is reported in local notices.
