For the first time in over seven decades the east side stained glass windows at St Marys Church in Elyria are being unveiled after renovation work from the 1930s bricked up walls. Parishioner Gertrude Wirsham recalls the windows as a child and notes their beauty as workers reveal them brick by brick.
Workers remove bricks and plaster around St. Marys windows and cover with plywood to protect delicate stained glass. Diedrick returns from retreat and reacts with wow while Mike Moore notes preference for older windows and foresees future beauty of the mid 20th century replacements.
A Lorain planning forum at St Joseph's Center explored using a new high school as a catalyst for downtown development. Architect Gary Fischer and Port Authority official Rick Nolan outlined three potential campus sites near Reid Avenue and 21st Street, including Lorain County Community College buildings.
In Elyria a 16 year old North Ridgeville boy Daniel Kovarbasich has been indicted on murder and felonious assault charges for the January 22 stabbing death of a family friend. He will be tried as an adult. If convicted he could face life in prison.
Lorain County reports its 1.3 million Summer Work Experience program has exhausted funds after nine months. About 275 youths were hired for data input and clerical tasks at EMH Regional Medical Center and other local sites, with 13 workers aged 21 to 24 laid off this week. Mary Murphy, acting workforce director, says 77.5 percent of funds were spent, and the goal was 70 percent by October. Vivian Alexander previously led the agency.
