US navy warns of insufficient sealift for large Middle East war
Rear Adm RG Hird told the House Merchant Marine Committee that the United States lacks enough ships to move sizeable forces to a Middle East conflict while preserving readiness in the Pacific and other theaters. He urged pre positioning of equipment and faster access to fast container ships to support a Marine amphibious brigade. Rep John Murphy backed the view that more sealift is needed for Korea and potential contingencies. Marine Lt Gen P Kelley, while presenting the Rapid Deployment Force, did not directly address the shortfall.
