After two frigid nights, two youngsters played pick up basketball at St Marys playground on Middle Avenue. A sign on the Citizens Home Savings building at 5320 Oberlin Avenue Lorain showed 196 degrees, a misprint or humor, as the air felt far cooler.
An Oberlin man abducted a 25-year-old nurse after she entered work at Allen Memorial Hospital. A five hour manhunt involved about 100 officers. Dennis Vaughn, 21, was found emerging from a barn west of Oberlin and jailed in Lorain County. The nurse was treated and released after police and hospital security intervened.
Militants told UPI they will allow the United Nations commission to meet some of the 50 American hostages held in the occupied U S Embassy in Tehran. A spokesman gave no count or date for the visit while noting it aims to aid the five member commission in probing crimes of the shah and the U S government.

Chase Manhattan Bank raised its prime lending rate by a half point to 17 percent, the first bank to reach that level, citing strong loan demand and higher market rates. First National Bank of Chicago quickly matched the move as Fed credit tightening looms.

Mayor George V. Voinovich sent a letter to President Carter offering Cleveland as a venue for an alternate Olympiad after the U.S. boycott decision. He proposed using local facilities: water sports at CSU natatorium, weightlifting at the Palace Theater, gymnastics at Public Hall, soccer at Municipal Stadium, boating on Lake Erie, and basketball and boxing at the Coliseum in Richfield, home of the Cavaliers.
