Mugabe seeks coalition with Nkomo in Rhodesia talks
Prime Minister elect Robert Mugabe met with guerrilla rival Joshua Nkomo away from public view to discuss a coalition to heal seven years of civil war. Official returns show Mugabe with over 62 percent and 57 of 80 black seats in a 100 member parliament, whites hold 20. Nkomo’s faction second with 20 seats. Mugabe urged blacks and whites to join in rebuilding Zimbabwe and warned against renewed conflict while promising to respect pension and property rights and to maintain white military leadership during army integration.
