Weekly Vietnam war deaths reach high since November

The US Command reports 113 U.S. GIs killed in Vietnam last week, the costliest period in nearly four months with 465 wounded. South Vietnamese losses were 333 killed and 1,000 wounded, while 2,009 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese were reported killed. The report notes helicopter losses and intensified firepower by enemy forces. The United States is turning over Can Tho port to the South Vietnamese.

Perjury indictment in mine case against Dillard Couch

Federal grand jurors indict Kentucky miner Dillard Couch on two counts of perjury in a case tied to the slaving of United Mine Workers official Joseph A Yablonski. The Harlan native allegedly lied about two October trips to Middlesboro with UMW District 19 researchers and cashed two checks totaling 935 dollars. The indictment notes no money source or purpose for the alleged trips and does not tie Couch’s checks to the Yablonski plot.

Lorain County approves 1970 budget for 9.68 million

Lorain County commissioners approved the 1970 budget totaling 9 681 335 including a 4 335 000 general fund. The general fund covers cost of living pay raises about five percent for county employees within the appropriation. Hospitalization benefits will be bid separately.

Three winged building approved for Lorain County Children's Home

A three winged T shaped building was approved by the Lorain County Children's Home planning group at Green Acres Oberlin. Architects Smith Clark Landig and Wykoff Associates of Elyria were given program requirements after a five hour session. Each wing will house up to 20 children with two bathrooms and adjustable rooms for younger and older children. Innovations include tub shower units and a living room with a TV for each wing.
