Jets hit Viet village in dusk attack near DMZ

About 175 jets bomb the village about a mile east of the Laotian border and eight miles south of the DMZ. Saigon officials report 83 bodies recovered and at least 200 wounded. UPI correspondent Robert Kaylor cites severe weather affecting dispatches.

The wounded were evacuated to Quang Tri and Hue by trucks, helicopters and military transports. Captain John J. Duffy of San Diego California, commander of a nearby Special Forces camp, is noted in connection with the action.

Kent State Eisra branch may be forced to close in Elyria

Kent State University officials discuss the possible closure of the Elyria branch first and second year programs to avoid duplication with Lorain County Community College. Powell lawyers prepare swift court bid to reinstate Powell

Powell's lawyers plan to file in federal court early next week asking the House be ordered to seat him again. They aim for rapid action to gain a psychological edge, drafting motions over the weekend and seeking swift disposition. The case would include all House members and officials involved in seating the member elect, with Speaker McCormack likely named.

John Chapla Dies Lorain Port Leader at 64

John Chapla, 64, vice chairman of the Lorain Port Authority, died at 1:28 a.m. after a massive heart attack suffered Feb. 17. He lived at 8407 East Erie Ave and worked as an investment banker with Paine-Webber-Jackson and Curtis in Cleveland. He was born May 10, 1902, to Anton and Elizabeth Chapla.

Kent State Elyria center closure prompts district plea

Dr. George B. Smittle Elyria schools superintendent warns closing the Kent State University Elyria center would create serious problems for Elyria Public Schools. He says Kent’s graduate programs and teaching credentials support recruitment and that Kent has been a major supplier of teachers for Elyria. The board urged the Ohio Board of Regents to allow continuation of the center at Elyria High School.

Two youths arrested after Eaton School break in

Lorain County deputies arrested 18 year old Jeff Thomas Burns of North Ridgeville and 17 year old Ronald Monroe Hymes of Graf ton after breaking into Eaton Elementary. They were found in the teachers lounge with a vending machine pry tool. The building had been ransacked with doors forced and items damaged. Authorities reported $21.25 in loose change on them.

Hong Kong reports six mayors in Mao plot

The Hong Kong Star claimed six Red Chinese city mayors plotted against Mao Tse-tung. It said Shanghai, Canton, Chungking, Hankow, Yilin, and Shenyang were involved. Mayor Tsao Ti-chiu of Shanghai was arrested, then released, with Premier Chou En-Lai ordering house arrest due to his worker support.

Columbia Local Board rejects bids on proposed high school addition

The Columbia Local Board of Education voted to reject all bids for the planned high school addition. Meanwhile Page and Tri-County high schools announced 26 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow award winners for 1967. The Black River school superintendent outlined duties of women in four elementary schools to clarify the situation. Page 13 features outdoor coverage including dual zone waterfowl season, Elyrians fishing gains, and 252 water bodies available for permits.

Defense figures show U S combat deaths rising sharply in early 1967 with U S losses about 74 percent above last year’s rate over two weeks and overall weekly deaths up 33 percent. Communist losses also climb, with North Vietnamese and Viet Cong totals up about 35 percent.

Hoffa’s final delay bid denied by federal judge

In Chattanooga, a federal judge denied Teamsters President James R. Hoffa extra time to prepare before prison. Judge Frank W. Wilson said Hoffa failed to show sufficient cause for a delay beyond March 7 and did not believe continued freedom would alter the situation. A formal order to follow.

Dentist Nominated to Elyria Airport Authority Seat

Dr Paul J Minnillo named to fill a vacancy on the Lorain County Regional Airport Authority representing Elyria, joining J William McCray with a continuing appointment. Minnillo, 36, is a Cleveland Heights native and U S Air Force veteran now practicing dentistry at 496 Cleveland St, Elyria. He and his wife Lucille live at 427 Whitman Blvd with five sons. The appointment awaits city council confirmation at Monday night session.
