Powell may haunt House that barred him

Powell, the Harlem preacher and longtime congressman, was barred by the House in a 307 to 116 vote after a censure plan, with his lawyers claiming unconstitutionality and threatening a federal suit. He faced a special election and possible return to the seat he has held since 1957, as civil rights leaders and his Harlem constituents reacted with anger and resolve.

Ohio lawmakers back bond and redistricting measures

Ohio senators and representatives approved self executing language for two constitutional changes to create a five member bond commission and to redraw districts. They set a statewide election date for May 2 but legal doubts were raised about timing and a separate emergency bill for a June 6 vote was discussed in conference.

Elyria Ternstedt to Resume First Shift Monday

General Motors officials said the Elyria Ternstedt Division plant will restart Monday at 7 a.m. after an eight day shutdown. About 1,000 production workers laid off February 21 will return on the first shift, joining Cleveland Ternstedt workers. A wildcat strike at Mansfield Fisher Body had prompted the shutdown, with 300 tool room and maintenance staff still on duty.

Court bans Rand serum permanently

Federal Judge James C. Connell ordered a permanent ban on manufacturing and distributing the Rand cancer vaccine. He denounced H. James Rand and Rand Development Corp for deliberate federal law violations and misleading the public to inflate stock.
