Egg Production and Pullet Mortality in Canadian Contest
Managers of the Canadian Egg Laying Contest see no link between high egg laying and pullet deaths. Records show deaths came from poorer layers and pens, prompting questions if selecting for high production weakened parents. A poultry scientist and an insurance actuary could study if early death and low pullet production share an organic weakness.

Keeping poultry flocks steady best for profit says Cray
Poultry expert R E Cray of Ohio State University warns that rapid flock fluctuations hurt profits. Keeping a stable flock size with annual chick purchases and early supply orders helps ensure fall and winter egg production and lower disease losses. He notes larger future grain crops could provide ample feed if weather cooperates.

Rain needed for strong corn crops in Ohio
Ohio farmers aiming for 60 bushels per acre in 1937 should expect to need about 20 to 24 inches of rainfall. Prof F J Salter of Ohio State notes corn uses 11.7 inches to mature and much rain is lost to evaporation and runoff. He warns drought impacts vary by crop and that hybrids resist drought better. Soil improvements, lime, fertilizer, and sod cover help retain moisture for corn following better rotations.

Manuring Boosts Barley Yield In Dry Years
Tests show manureed land yielding about 6 bushels of barley per acre, with commercial fertilizer close behind. In dry years the manured plots retain moisture better, producing a clear advantage over non manured soil.

Indoor plant feeding tips boost growth in sunlit homes
In Columbus on March 3, Victor H. Ries of Ohio State University says longer sunlit hours raise house plant hunger. Use complete fertilizers near 4-12-4 and apply quarter teaspoon monthly for 4 inch pots, adjusting for size. Regular watering ensures nutrients reach the soil and avoid overfeeding.
