Paratroopers rout Viet Cong near Saigon bases

Allied forces claim 56 Viet Cong killed in two battles near Tan Son Nhut and Bien Hoa as paratroopers from the 101st and South Vietnamese units ambush and repel guerrilla forces. Separate actions included clashes north of Tan Son Nhut and near Khe Sanh with heavy Communist casualties.

Colleges may fill draft call as graduates expected

Washington reports that nearly all draftees for the next year will be college graduates due to new draft rules. Betty Vetter of the Manpower Commission told a House subcommittee that about 240 000 men drafted starting June 1 will come from graduate schools after deferments for graduate study ended. Rep. Frank Thompson warned this could create a flood of college graduate privates. Lt. Gen. Hershey said changes to draft order are for the Defense Secretary to decide. Separately, the Civil Aeronautics Board recommended approving Lake Central’s merger with Allegheny Airlines due to Lake Central losses.
