Akron labor leaders threaten a general strike in a city of 225 000 as Goodyear Tire and Rubber plants enter a third week of walkouts. Central Labor Union authorized by a 25 member committee to call the strike if force is used to reopen plants or to win the Goodyear dispute. A general strike would paralyze the rubber industry and the city, with 45 000 workers affected plus indirect rubber plant employment.
Washington March 2 The treasury opened sales of 1.25 billion dollars in new securities as part of a record government debt surpassing 31 billion. The sale includes 12 to 15 year bonds and 5 year notes. Total financing could reach about 1.808 billion with conversions of existing notes. Proceeds will cover short term bill redemptions and interest due March 16.
Generally fair tonight and Tuesday with light rain in the east portion early tonight. Temperatures rise Tuesday, with slightly colder conditions in the extreme south tonight.
Mrs Tom Bradshaw and her newborn son survived a tornado that ripped their Turley Oklahoma home. An hour later the father located the infant outdoors with minor injuries. At Tulsa hospital the boy was pronounced only slightly hurt and expected to recover.
Washington March 2 Congress opposition formed into two lines over Roosevelt’s 1 137 000 000 tax bill. Republicans and some Democrats demand spending cuts while inflationists push for more currency. Administration leaders expect a hard fight in both houses as they seek at least 786 million dollars yearly in new revenue to fund farm relief and the soldiers bonus.
Officials of Inter City By-Products Company asked county officials for aid to blast an ice barricade blocking the intake along Black River near North Ridge Road. They warned the plant near closure, noting it employs 70 men if the blockage lasts.
In Tokyo on March 2 the death of Maj Takasuke Amano as the revolt’s latest personal crisis item. Surviving officers of about twenty involved await trial while martial law remains in effect. A weekend of Ohio crashes left at least eight dead. In Cleveland a car overturned and burned killing Rudolf Gauch and Russell D. Jones. Raymond Kaczmarczyk and John Dreslinski survived with injuries. In Columbus Carrie Pixley died when a train struck a stalled car. her husband John Pixley failed to rescue her. Akron saw Jack Tharp Jr. 10 fatally struck while roller skating. Wooster reported Catherine Hudson 35 killed in a separate crash. Three additional fatalities occurred in Cleveland involving Ruth Kinkoph 7, Andrew Lichanec 52, and Edward Thailing 59.
Mrs. M. E. Hendricks of 818 East avenue is recovering in Bellevue Hospital from a fractured right leg after a collision at Route 59 and 4 Saturday around 2 p m. Her husband, driver of the car, was uninjured and returned home. Dolieva Diewald, 8, of 154 Abbe road, was treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital Saturday afternoon for minor injuries after being struck by an automobile. Eddie Szmania, 22, of Grafton, also received minor injuries at Memorial Hospital from a Sunday crash. None of these incidents were reported to police.
Mrs Belle B Stephen was reappointed a trustee of the Lorain County Oberlin Children's Home at Oberlin for five years on a motion by County Commissioner Harry J Shaw. The vote was two to one with Commissioner Oscar G Dunn voting no citing that Oberlin already has a trustee and suggesting a Lorain candidate. Shaw also sought a $25 monthly raise for one investigator. Davidson and Dunn supported the increase though the board had allowed $100 monthly before. Dunn warned of insufficient investigators, while trustees say two are needed. Shaw announced his resignation as county commissioner to take effect at 4 p.m. today, citing his duties as general manager of Keystone Driller Co at Beaver Falls, Pa.
The county clerk office reports February sales reached 220 new passenger cars and 31 new trucks, surpassing January totals of 208 cars and 34 trucks. In February 1955, sales were 168 cars and 20 trucks.
Harry Gezunterman of 8 2 West Broad Street was fined 50 dollars and costs with 35 dollars suspended after arraignment before Mayor Don A. Baird on a charge of keeping a gambling place. Patrolmen Parker and Andress broke up a card game there Friday night.
In New York City a million or more residents faced immense disruption as twenty thousand elevator operators and other building staff walked out. Authorities mobilized thousands of police and a mix of strike breakers to steward essential services while buildings shifted to emergency crews and guards.
Ella M. Peat mother of Henry G. Peat of Elyria printing firm died at 5 West Washington Norwalk after a stroke. She born in Milan 87 years ago married Edwin J. Peat in 1877. Survived by husband four sons Henry G Elyria Arthur H Modesto Ernest C Ralph M Mansfield one sister Delia Toss Los Angeles nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements set with St Pauls Episcopal Church and Rebekah lodge grave ritual.
More than 250 singers from five Lake Erie High schools gather at Elyria High on March 21 for the annual Lake Erie League choral festival hosted by Elyria. Each school’s a cappella chorus performs 12 minutes, followed by a selected group of 120 to 150 singers from all schools singing four numbers. Schools: Elyria Lorain Lakewood Shaw and Cleveland Heights. The program includes a Lorain brass quartet and performances directed by Florence Shaffer and T R Evans. The event runs 8 p.m with preconcert activities starting at 2:30 p.m including rehearsal, dancing, dinner, and a motion picture show.
Flames engulf the three story Warren hotel as residents fear spread to the Union Savings and Trust Co. A man and a woman perished after jumping from a third floor window. Five others injured were hospitalized. Firefighters from Niles, Youngstown and Girard aided in rescue. Names of hospitalized include O Day Wellness Louer and Mr and Mrs Smith. Mrs Smith, hotel manager's wife, was badly burned.
ADDIS ABABA March 2 Italians push swiftly in southern Ethiopia as Ras Desta Demtu’s army resists. Fighters rush from across the region to block the main road to Addis Ababa. Italian units left Neghelli, passed Wardera, near the Adolo pass defended by Demtu and his forces. Finance Minister Fiquir Selas sie flew south to join the troops.
J S Curry recalls crafting a light sleigh in his teens by hand on 56 years ago, starting with a felled tree, water mill sawing, bending runners with a heated wood bend, and self forging 34 iron braces at a busy blacksmith. He later left the area for schooling and business ventures amid a tale of old time crafts.
