Firemen battled a grass blaze that scorched 700 to 800 acres north of Caroline street and east to Brandston, reaching near houses along Gulf Road and Spring Valley. Breakouts at 1 15 pm led to a second fight at 3 10 pm with back fires to protect homes. the blaze started from a vacant lot burn by a boy under his mother’s guidance.

Mellon Pans Financing Of Vets Loans
Washington March 2 Arrangements for partially financing the increased loans in World War veterans have been completed today by the treasury. Secretary Mellon announced plans for finance March 15 of a total offering of 1 400 000 000 of which only 291 000 900 is to be applied toward veterans loans. The remaining 1 109 000 000 is to refund outstanding securities called for redemption March 15. The size of the treasury offering surprised since under secretary Mills had told the senate an issue of 1 600 000 000 would be required if the veterans loan measure passed. The only new money being borrowed is the 291 000 000 to pay the veterans loans. the rest is refunding obligations. The treasury will likely borrow another 40 000 000 of new money in June for further veterans loans. To more than this total of 69 000 000 is needed for this purpose, the treasury will use its income tax receipts due March 15, possibly necessitating more government borrowing in spring. Previous treasury estimates of the cost of the veterans measure were about 1 000 000 000.
