Bear Escape Story Tied to Cascade Park History
Elyria recollections recall the 1920 arrival of two bears at Cascade Park from Riverview and a later incident when a young female cub escaped the Lascace area. Henry Ault, mayor and longtime council president, and Walt Gehrke, police sergeant, recount the bear’s roam while park staff and even coonhounds pursued it. The piece notes a 1940s cub transfer from Canada, arranged by Henry Ault, and the immigration delays at Buffalo, reflecting local memory of a long ago bear episode.

Bear saga helps shape Cascade Park legacy in Elyna
The bear tale spans years of city life from early wildwood to Cascade Park. Henry, Buffalo officials, and local attorney Frank Wilford navigate red tape and wires costing 63 to relocate and house the cubs. Johnny Madhock and police hunted the bear, roping it from a tree and returning it to its den after a chase. Gracie the tame bear was born in Cascade, and legends say she lived with the Machocks before later returning to den life. Theresa bronze plaque honors John Machock, Cascade Park’s longtime superintendent who died in 1965 after 42 years of service.
