Chicago union chief jailed as city clamps down on strikers
Chicago officials backed by Mayor Jane Byrne press a hard line against the 17 day firefighters strike. Fire Fighters Union Local President Frank Muscare remains jailed on contempt charges as the Illinois Supreme Court declines to free him. City plans disciplinary actions toward 280 strikers and five battalion chiefs for joining picket lines, with hearings set as March 11.

Golden dragon leads Chinese New Year parade in San Francisco
A 150 foot golden dragon, bands and beauty queens will headline the Year of the Monkey parade in San Francisco, with more than 400000 expected to view the 14 block event starting at 7 p.m. The procession includes 60 units and the newly crowned Miss Chinatown USA, Ronda Wei Jeyn Ching of Honolulu, as firecrackers and crowds fill the streets.
