Singer John Denver testified at a House subcommittee on wilderness legislation and broke into song with a guitar. He sang about Alaska and freedom, prompting loud applause from committee members and the audience at the witness table.
Eddie Anderson, the actor known as Rochester on the Jack Benny program, died at 71 from congestive heart failure. A spokesman said he had been at the Motion Picture Country House and Hospital since December 17, after a long career as Benny’s brash valet and valet-turned-porter on a 1987 Benny radio show about a train trip.
Uganda leader Idi Amin announced that all Americans are free to travel or leave Uganda reversing previous travel prohibitions aimed at improving relations with the United States. Amin reassured expatriates, saying Ugandans are their brothers and sisters and denying any ill will amid continued security warnings.
