Reno police report a 400 pound safe stolen from the Redfield residence contained about 2.5 million dollars in cash securities and jewelry. A battered suitcase nearby may hold another million. The burglary occurred while the couple played roulette at a downtown casino.
A Federal Grand Jury indicted Ward Walton and Marion A. Ward of Sycamore Mill & Supply Co. plus Clarence E. Davis and others on 13 counts for disposing of over 257 thousand bushels of CCC backed corn and wheat. Walton separately faced charges for moving 240 thousand bushels at Upper Sandusky. Davis is accused of removing grain pledged to the CCC and making false statements to influence storage payments.

Congress considers a bill requiring the Ohio Public Utilities Commission to extend gas service to homes of veterans who are totally disabled or have lost use of limbs. Rep. Alvin F. Weichel cites a veteran in Elyria denied gas for a new home and notes a planned April hearing as Ohio firms assess next year’s gas supplies.

Thomas Holliday eight years old of 36 Spruce street was struck on Lake avenue by John Presutto 534 Vul can street while running into the street. He was taken to Elyria Memorial hospital by Don Lewis 775 North Ridge road where he remained under observation at noon. Presutto said he was driving north on Lake avenue when the boy darted into the road at Oak street on a slippery pavement and he could not stop his car. He said he was traveling about 20 miles per hour and slid about 15 feet.
Miss Sophia Tratcoff 128 Blake Street was appointed clerk in the city auditor’s office and will also serve as clerk of the Recreation Commission. She succeeds Leona C. Rocher, is sister of Olga Jeancola, Elyria High School 1951 graduate, and has been a Kasper Foundry secretary for nine months.
Premier Aly Maher Pasha resigns after Anglo Egyptian negotiations are delayed by British ambassador illness. King Farouk accepts the resignation. Maher had taken office after the Wafd ouster following Cairo riots.
Robert Hungerford, a Elgin Coach company driver of 425 Woodland Elyria, was found guilty by Mayor Henry W. Ault after a Elyria Mayor’s court hearing. He was fined 19 dollars plus costs for blocking traffic on February 15 while stopping to let off passengers along Homer Norton and Eadycourt streets, leaving 25 to 30 cars in line behind. Captain James E. Boggs testified that the bus did not pull to the curb at multiple stops though space existed, and Hungerford admitted not pulling over due to parked cars. Attorney Roy Vandemark argued the bus stops were not marked. Page 2.
Dr Yi-Pao Mei, visiting professor from Cincinnati and on leave from Yenching University, spoke at Oberlin College's pre Mock Convention symposium. He cited over-idealization of communism in China, anti Chiang sentiment, postwar coalitions with Red China, and Washington's white paper as causes of U.S. China policy confusion and failure. Deputy registrars at Elyria two offices saw a rush of applicants for windshield stickers proving the 1952 motor vehicle license fee is paid. The sheriff's department was asked today to aid in a search for Lawrence Wolzak a 16 year old of 609 West Third street who has been missing since Thursday according to information furnished the department.

Robert Christy a 33 year old resident of Lodi Ohio sustained a fractured nose and chest injuries in a head on collision on Grafton Road two miles south of Route 82. He was treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital at 1 10 a m. Deputy Granda later reported a separate minor collision at Route 58 and Middle Ridge Road involving Mrs Mabel Higgins. Traffic summons were issued to James Gardner after a collision on Route 201 at the city eastern limits with a truck driven by Sylvester Rothery.
Four Elyria men joined the Army or Air Force. David A Jacobs 19 of 993 W Third Street enlisted in the Regular Army for two years. David Gibson 19 of 35157 Center Ridge Road Ridgeville Edwin A Olsen 17 Elyria enlisted in the Regular Army for three years Joseph J Herman 17 of 503 Bond Street and William E Brown 19 of 9672 Woodford Avenue enlisted in the U S Air Force for four years. Army enlistees head to Ft Meade Maryland Air Force volunteers to Sampson Air Force Base Geneva New York.
