House moves toward final vote on foreign aid program
The House nears a final vote on President Eisenhower's $3.285 billion foreign aid program with amendments still to be settled. A Republican plan would allow Hollister to fire 200 Foreign Operations Administration staff earning over $5,440 a year, a move Democrats deride as jobs for Republicans while supporters say it prevents inefficiency. Opposition cites the aim to keep holdover Democrats from the program. Other items include a one year extension of the temporary debt ceiling from 282 to 275 billion and warnings about Dixon Yates, budgeting and highway legislation. final defense budget approval would keep the Marine Corps at 75,000.
