Immunization Urged for Hog Cholera by State Vet
State veterinarian F A Zimmer urges immunization of pigs against hog cholera in a bulletin. Vaccinating spring pigs now can maximize immunity, reduce serum needs, and lower costs, preventing losses that reach 20 to 25 million dollars annually. Suggestions On Tree Selection For Ohio Planting
Ohio forester J A Gibbs says choosing tree species for erosion control on steep slopes matters more than planting any single species. After a Zanesville meeting, he notes black locust is versatile but other species fit soil type climate and drainage. Pine species are recommended for erosion control with red and white pines in the north and shortleaf and Virginia pines in the south. Livestock exclusion via fencing is vital, illustrated by the G E Butler farm in Muskingum County where a depleted slope is now vegetated after fall 1934 plantings using black locust red pine tulip poplar and black walnut.

Potatoes Show Value of Disease Free Seed in South America
COLUMBUS, C., June 30. E B Tussing, OSU vegetable gardening specialist, notes disease resistant seed stocks essential after his South American travels. Buenos Aires market sold potatoes at 2 dollars per bushel April 14 as harvests lagged in major producing areas, with yields for Green Mountains at 300 bushels an acre versus 60 for native stock. Despite high prices, farm profitability faltered due to poor yields. No government program is advancing resistant seed or disease free seed production. A Southern Railroad field test compared 38 varieties to native stocks, while growers used mechanical diggers yet relied on hand harvesting to protect valuable towers. Acreage averages 20 to 25, though one Buenos Aires dealer managed 2,500 acres. Unripe potatoes were killed by frost around April 14 in the Buenos Aires district. Rainfall parallels Ohio. irrigation needs vary by area.

Pheasants Thrive In Rich Farm Area
In Ohio, Dr. Lawr rothe FE Hicks of Ohio State University notes game management succeeds in Wood county via a state refuge, ample feed and cover. About 7,200 adult pheasants existed in Liberty township in 1936, with 200 per square mile, while predators like humans, cats, dogs and crows are controllable to aid propagation. Not all Ohio counties suit pheasant stocking and efforts have failed in 28 southeastern counties.
