Congress Plods Toward Adjournment Amid Economy Bill
Washington June 23 A weary Congress slowly heads to adjournment with the July Fourth in Washington seen as the likely break. The $150 million government economy bill awaits Hoover's signature and would impose widespread furloughs and pay cuts on federal workers. Senate Republicans La Follette Bingam Reed opposed the measure calling it a humiliating surrender. Major savings include two months unpaid leave for most federal staff earning $1000 or more and an 8.3 percent salary cut for others, with larger cuts for top officials and a ban on many promotions. The bill also authorizes mass dismissals to fit budgets and prioritizes spousal recall rules in married government positions. The plan to create thousands of part time jobs via savings was derailed by House changes.
