Reagan calls meeting on Lebanon
President Reagan called a National Security Council meeting to review developments in war torn Lebanon amid a shake up in foreign policy. The outcome of attendance by outgoing Secretary Haig or his successor George Shultz was not indicated. Haig’s resignation came during a tumultuous period in the Middle East with disagreements over letting Israel finish the Lebanon operation. Reagan, described as tremendously upset by Lebanon casualties, questioned Israeli aims as Haig urged strong action to break Palestinian leadership and install a central Lebanese government. Reagan returned from Camp David and avoided questions on policy.
