Berri says Beirut hostage crisis near end amid French offer

Beiruts Shiite leader Nabih Berri said the 13 day siege of 39 American hostages from a TWA hijacking could end soon as France offered to house them. He cited a 30 minute meeting with French Embassy officials and noted no U.S. response yet while Swiss mediators studied an idea to move captives to Bern. The two French hostages remain alive and unlocated by officials.

Ohio lawmakers push back on auto emission tests funding

Ohio area legislators led by State Rep. John Bara and Marie Tansey signed a letter to Gov. Celeste to challenge federal sanctions aimed at forcing rapid adoption of an auto emissions testing law. The letter warns of a $500 million funding cut for Lorain, Cuyahoga, and Lake counties if a state plan is not enacted, with testing slated to start in 1986.

Elyria 1986 Budget Projects 12 Percent Spending Rise

Elyria City Council finance committee approves a 1986 operating budget of about 16 million dollars with a 1.8 million general fund debt, forecasting roughly a 12 percent rise from 1985 and 14.2 million in general fund revenue including 329 thousand carried over. The plan awaits full council review and a July 15 submission to the Lorain County Budget Commission.

Lorain Eyes Breakwall Funds Amid Federal Setback

Lorain officials traveled to Washington to seek at least 1 million dollars for a harbor breakwall to boost the economy. Administration officials said no recreation funds were available and Congress must decide in the fall budget review. Lorain Port Authority plans a strategic development effort around the harbor to attract growth.
