Supreme Court backs voluntary minority preferences in hiring

The Supreme Court, by a 5-2 vote, allows private employers with no proven bias to use race conscious affirmative actions. In Weber v Kaiser, white worker Brian Weber was kept from a craft training program. the court said federal anti bias law does not ban all race based plans. Chief Justice Burger and Justice Rehnquist dissented. Justice Stevens recused himself. Weber was a Kaiser lab worker in Gramercy Louisiana. program aimed at boosting minority craft workers.

Israel says warplanes down five Syrian MiG-21s over Lebanon coast

Israeli military says its fighters shot down five Syrian MiGs over southern Lebanon while pursuing strikes on Palestinian guerrilla bases near Sidon. Damascus Radio reported four Syrian jets hit and two Israeli planes downed, with conflicting tallies from Beirut sources. The clash followed Prime Minister Begin's warning of intensified strikes against the guerrillas.
