Rescue under way as Blough hull pumps drain fuel oil

Rescue crews sift the charred USS Roger Blough hull where more than a million gallons of fuel oil and water complicate a search for four missing men. The fire abated after hours, pumping lowers water level, and officials say the four men are likely dead.

Fire hero praised for bravery at Lorain oil soaked ship fire

Michael J. Brandon, a welder on the Roger Brough, and Burt Mucha of Local 358 describe unsafe working conditions aboard the plough before a fire lit by oil and grease. Brandon, laid off days earlier, helped firemen in the engine room as colleagues blamed poor ventilation slippery decks and bare bulbs for the blaze.

86 Lorain firemen battle ship blaze for 24 hours

Fire aboard the Roger Blough at American Ship Building Co. drew 86 Lorain firefighters to the scene from about 10 a.m. Thursday until 8 a.m. yesterday. Thirty-one on duty plus 55 off duty worked nearly a full day with some men logging 20 to 22 hours straight as a watch remained for pumping operations.

Ohio Fuel to join new gas combine

The Columbia Gas System completes a 16 year realignment as Ohio Fuel Gas Co joins a new company. Seven Columbia subsidiaries merge into Columbia Gas Transmission Corp to transport and sell wholesale interstate gas to affiliated and non affiliated customers including 26 Ohio gas companies. Offices stay in Columbus area, Charleston, W Va, and Pittsburgh. New main HQ will be Wilmington, Delaware.

Deadly Ohio storms cause wide damage and outages

Severe storms swept across Ohio causing at least one death Harold Stephenson of Columbus was electrocuted by a fallen wire. Winds 60 to 70 mph uprooted trees toppled trailers and disrupted power and communications across a 40 county area. Marysville officials sought guard aid but looting fears were deemed overstated. crews cleared major roads later.
