Supreme Court backs zoning limits on sex entertainment venues

The Supreme Court, in a 5 to 4 ruling, allows cities to use zoning to restrict topless bars, adult theaters, and similar outlets, aiming to curb so called sex strips. Detroit prosecutor Maureen Reilly says the decision helps limit such clustered establishments near each other or near residences. Justice Stevens wrote the majority opinion, with dissent by four justices including Potter Stewart. The ruling upholds a Detroit ordinance adding pornography parlors to restricted business categories. The decision raises concerns about First Amendment implications for media.
