Tomato pruning and staking guidance from OSU extension
Ohio State University extension horticulturist W M Brooks warns that excessive pruning of staked tomatoes causes fruit cracking and lower yields. Remove only the first two or three suckers, tie later growth, and use a two stem system when feasible. Staking offers earlier yields and cleaner fruit, while ground culture reduces stake-related labor.
