Ohio farm outlook for 1951 predicts higher income with limited buying power

Ohio State University economist Melvin G. Smith told Production Credit Association staff that net farm income in 1951 may reach the 1947 peak of 17.8 million dollars, but higher costs and taxes will leave purchasing power only about 10 percent higher. Prices for farm products should rise only slightly, with most changes seasonal. A panel of extension economists noted above average seed and grain supplies, stable dairy outlook, and tight feeder margins for cattle, hogs, and real estate. In Belleville, trucker Lew E. Martin ignored a slow down hand signal and narrowly avoided a collision, leading to an arrest by Sheriff Max L. Hill.
