Washington June 25 The House Judiciary committee reported favorably the Wagner unemployment bill authorizing state employment agencies with federal aid. This action brings the entire Wagner relief program, already passed by the Senate in three bills, before the House for final action.
A heat wave lingered in Ohio as storms promised sectional relief. Drownings, prostrations, and wind damage spanned Springfield to Columbus, with telegraph poles toppled, trees uprooted, and crops ruined. Total losses estimated at 50 000 dollars. temperatures ranged 85 to 100 plus 102 near Ironton. Robert Bainter, 10, drowned in the Scioto River while fishing.
W A Talbot of Cleveland was elected State Commander of the Ohio department Grand Army of the Republic at the 84th annual encampment in Lorain Ohio. Columbus was named 1931 convention city while Alexis Brown of Cincinnati withdrew after the first ballot. August Baldwin of Lorain named Senior Vice Commander. The gathering also featured a street pageant and a fireworks display amid tensions over a potential joint encampment with the North and South Veterans. Ed win J Foster opposed the plan saying Stars and Bars must not march with Union forces. Old Glory must fly alone. The Ohio Veterans of Foreign Wars plan to hold their three day state convention after the G A R events.
Police have no clews to the identity of two bandits who robbed the Hamilton Industrial Bank of $806. The heist occurred while bank examiners, the manager A. D. Fille, and other staff were inside the building and the robbers fled on an automobile.
In Youngstown Ohio on June 25 Cyrus S Eaton moved to block a billion dollar merger between Youngstown Sheet and Tube and Bethlehem Steel. Eaton filed for an injunction in Mahoning County court claiming the merger was consummated by gross fraud. The suit was brought in the name of Myron C Wick Jr and the International Shares Corporation, with Wick among Eaton’s stockholder allies dissenting from the merger.
Border patrol officer Robert Kelsey was critically wounded by three smugglers on the Texas side of the Rio Grande. He fired back and said he wounded one attacker as the group opened fire at close range, leaving him gravely injured.
Chicago wins financial relief via a special session with a $49 million increase in bonding power and tax Amendment authority to raise revenues, as lawmakers approve the measures in Springfield on June 25.

Newark June 25 The day opened with a business session and closed with a large parade as the annual meeting of the Ohio Fraternal Order of Eagles highlighted activities. Delegates from the local aerie included William France Gerald C. Nau state president Arthur R. Graber Steve J. Leser and Oscar Jacobs with alternates E J Handy side Robert Jensen William Kofsky C E Poole and William Cashman. Elyria Eagles will represent the local aerie and Elyria city in the parade outfitted in new uniforms. The Lima convention city for 1931 was chosen and officers for 1930-31 were elected: E N Barry president Louis Rudner vice president Joseph Curran conductor Matthew L. Brown secretary William G. Beatty treasurer Joseph Smith outer guard August Hoff inner guard Sanford Morrison trustee.
Thirty Elyria merchants led the Norwalk nine district Ohio Council of Retail Merchants meeting attended by 125 business people from six counties. Frank Stockdale urged retention and growth amid a retail shakeup while outlining three policy goals to uncover facts, plan for now and teach salespeople.
John Webb was arraigned on a petit larceny charge for stealing gasoline from a car. He faced fines, $25 plus costs, for taking a gallon from Ralph Pierce, with a larger total of $45.10 in fines and jail days hinted for the wider offense. Mayor Hewitt warned that gasoline and auto accessory theft would be dealt with severely to curb this practice.
Washington June 25 The House unanimously accepted the disputed World War Veterans pension bill and directed it to President Hoover for his anticipated veto. Speaker Longworth pledged 154 Republican votes to sustain objections while promising a friendlier compromise after veto. The Senate measure passed 66 to 6.
Alex Mate, 18, of 616 Massey Avenue, died at Elyria Memorial Hospital after falling from the Black River riverbank near Eighteenth Street. He suffered a broken neck and passed away four minutes after arrival. Hospital Superintendent John R. Mannix attributed the fatal injuries to the fall while Mate was with a group of boys along the river.
Melbourne June 25 Miss Mary Powell fiancee of Capt. Charles E Kingsford Smith said she would spend the day near the telephone after learning the Southern Cross reached Newfoundland She praised the achievement and noted their wedding is set for September She added he would not attempt more long distance flights once the Atlantic crossing succeeds.
The campfire gathered YMCA board members and about 30 visitors plus boys as directors joined a baseball game against a campers team. John Lersch won the Best Camper award and camp songs were written to On Wisconsin and Pagan Love Song. First year emblems were awarded to many named boys, second year to others, and four veterans earned third year emblems.
Harbor Grace Newfoundland June 25 The Southern Cross crew led by Captain Charles Kingsford Smith sleep at Hotel Cochrane after a 31 hour 35 minute flight from Portmarnock near Dublin covering 2190 miles. Evert Van Dyk Patrick Saul and John Stannage join the exhausted team preparing for the next leg to New York.
The U S Marine hospital in Cleveland will be dedicated on Saturday June 28 with officials from the Public Health Service and medical leaders attending. The old 1837 building, with capacity for 320 patients, is replaced by a modern group of buildings on a 10 acre tract housing 250 patients and a staff of 180 including doctors and nurses.
