Akron professor seeks 400 volunteers for summer respiratory study
Associate Professor Richard A. Mostardi and his team at Akron University recruit 400 volunteers aged 20 to 70 from Elyria to join a five part respiratory health test this summer. Testing runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cascade Elementary School June 26 through July 28 and Prospect Elementary School July 31 through August 25. The study aims to map prevalent respiratory diseases in northeastern Ohio to improve overall health.

Governor weighs state aid to fix I 480 runoff
North Ridgeville mayor said Gov. Rhodes will study state financial help to curb flood risk from Interstate 480 runoff. Rhodes called back and said he will review the matter with ODOD and coordinate with the city, which seeks plan changes to avoid worse drainage. An ODOT engineer said plans will be altered but any extra costs would fall to the city.

EPA study tests air pollution effects on heart and lungs
The EPA funded Cleveland initiated project tests effects of air pollution on heart and lungs in East Cleveland and Akron. Dalton Industries employees volunteer. Volunteers undergo five tests including questionnaires, pulmonary function, hair trace metals, ECG, exercise test, blood tests, and blood pressure. A control group from Elyria is used for comparison.

City payroll paid late as printer fails to deliver checks
About 150 city workers faced delays in payday because a Connecticut firm printing 30,000 payroll checks could not deliver on time. Utilities superintendent Grace said old checks were used to cover most payments and a contract clause promised timely delivery was unmet. A computer system handles payroll and the delayed checks caused a temporary crisis.
