City council members and Mayor Allan Mills conducted their last summer session in Colonial costumes mimicking delegates to the Continental Congress. They carried on by candle light and some used quilled pens, as part of celebrating the nation’s 200th birthday with a staged period atmosphere.

At Sohio stations regular gasoline climbs to 59.9 cents and premium to 63.9 cents per gallon, with home heating oil and diesel up half a cent. Sohio cites higher crude and operating costs. Metzenbaum criticizes the move as unneeded profit. Griffin says price rises meet federal regulation and higher foreign crude costs. Nationwide prices have risen about five cents since April amid expected further increases.
A foggy St Lawrence River rupture released 5,000 barrels of heavy fuel oil from a barge, halting commercial traffic 20 miles downstream near Lake Ontario. Ten cargo tanks carried 160,000 barrels total. three ruptured but officials say containment is in progress and no further spill is expected.
The Elyria YMCA will add a gymnasium and offices at its Washington Avenue pool facility while private developers buy the Court Street building for an office health club. The YMCA and developers expect completion within three years with a $750,000 fundraising drive set to begin next spring.

The first four days of July 1776 lead to the Declaration of Independence with myth cracking research and dramatic narrative. Starting Friday, July 4 is the series finale.
