Democratic Leader Attacks Benson Farm Control Plan

Rep. Harold D. Cooley, Democrat from North Carolina, denounced Agriculture Secretary Ezra Benson for proposing across the board acreage cuts and new crop controls as a move to “blackmail” farmers and make himself a “czar.” Benson set next year’s national wheat allotment at 55 million acres, the lowest under current law, and tied eligibility for price supports to compliance with crop acreage quotas. The plan targets basic crops across the board, with 12.7 percent cuts for the 1955 wheat crop, and affects farmers with at least 10 acres. Cooley warned of possible amendments to block the plan, while Committee Chair Hope anticipated a one-year parity support extension.
