Mikus to name special prosecutor in Lorain probe

Common Pleas Administrative Judge Paul J. Mikus will appoint a special prosecutor to pursue possible unlawful expenditures of federal funds in Lorain's home improvement program. County Prosecutor Joseph R. Grunda requested the appointment amid insinuations the inquiry was politically motivated. A special grand jury led by Dean Hitchens has probed the Lorain CETA program since April after a CETA audit flagged about 350000 dollars in questionable expenditures. Grunda emphasized no political motive and urged continued grand jury work to serve the public interest amid his election defeat by Daniel Stringer. He offered full cooperation to any special prosecutor. The grand jury adjourned until Aug 6 to allow more testimony review.
