Gangster Higgins Shot Down Amid Crossfire From Family Nearby
Charles Higgins known as Vannie, a noted mob figure linked to Jack Diamond and Augie Pisano's Brooklyn beer crew, was killed Sunday morning in a crossfire while walking with his seven year old daughter after leaving a dance recital. His wife and mother in law stood nearby as two rival gang lines opened fire. Higgins had dodged earlier charges and vowed to target his killers, but died without naming them. Patrolman Walter Herzer helped transport him, but Higgins died en route.
