Elyria honors its first and fastest track teams
Elyria High School celebrate both boys and girls track squads for state titles, district and regional runner ups, and eight All Ohio honors. The girls won state with the 4x100 relay led by Tianna Madison, Christina Madison, Maria Whitely, and Heather Davis. Boys set school records in sprint medley, 4x100 and 800 meters, finishing 24th at state.

Best friend recalls driver's last words in fatal crash
Gladys McDougal recalls urging her granddaughter Kari Thompson to stay at a bridal shower after the 19 year old Elyria resident was killed when a tractor trailer hit her northbound car at Routes 18 and 511 in Brighton Township. Ohio Highway Patrol reports Thompson ran a stop sign. a passenger vehicle followed closely as Thompson tried to slow down and pass. Thompson, who had moved between Ashland Mapleton High School and the Browns in Ashland Township, was talking on a cellphone with her best friend Mandy Brown at the time of the crash.

Larry Doby dies at 79 Hall of Famer known for breaking color barrier
New York AP reports Hall of Famer Larry Doby died at his Montclair New Jersey home after a long illness. The seven time All Star played mainly for the Cleveland Indians and helped them win the 1948 World Series. Doby joined the Indians on July 5 1947 eleven weeks after Jackie Robinson opened baseball color barrier. Discrepancies exist over his birth date with 1923 or 1924. He hit 233 253 home runs and 969 RBIs in a 1959 career. Friends teammates recall tough reception in debut season. Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller called him a great guy.
