The Tories won 316 seats to Labor 278 with a projected majority around 30, promising pro American policy and European Market aims. Wilson offered resignation. Soyuz 9 lands after 17 day space endurance flight

Soviet spaceship Soyuz 9 returned to earth with cosmonauts Andrian Nikolayev and Vitaly Sevastoyanov after a 17 day 16 hour 59 minute orbit. It landed 45 miles west of Karaganda in good shape. Data will aid plans for an orbiting space platform for research.

U S launches spy satellite from Cape Kennedy

The Air Force fired an Atlas Agena rocket from Cape Kennedy at 7 30 a m EDT sending a secret spy satellite into a near stationary orbit about 20000 miles above Southeast Asia The mission named Project 49 aims to provide early warning and intelligence on Soviet and other forces with sensors including TV infrared and X ray to detect missile activity and test launches The program cost 43 million dollars in fiscal 1970

City workers offered 1 percent raise in counterproposal

City administrators and the finance committee of Elva Ma Civ Council presented a 1 percent pay rise offer to Local 277 of the AFSCME last night, as the first city proposal since acquisitions a month ago. Union district officer William Petite declined to detail his reaction beyond saying he reacted. An informal session will be held early next week. a later meeting was not scheduled. The city noted nonuniformed workers have had a 22 percent pay rise over 3.2 years, and that hospitalization life insurance and a pay decrease offset this as a 4 percent package. Other points included no union shop mention and a 1 percent longevity pay from year four to year 20 for 17 percent max. The union had asked for more.

Sargent innocent of slayings but convicted for robbery
