Hothouse Tomato Industry Grows in Lorain County
Tomato growing under glass is a big industry in Lorain County with 125 acres of spring tomatoes. Ellis Hoag, VP of the National Hothouse Growers Association, notes Ohio strains WR-3 and Globe are common, while Cincinnati and Dayton growers favor the red strain. Local growers rely on coal heated boilers and pond or well water, with 600 tons of coal per acre and 400000 gallons of water per acre. Off season, greenhouses raise lettuce and watercress for local markets. Bible lettuce shows potential but needs research.
