Mother Faces Murder Charge In Baby's Death

A Clyde Ohio case centers on a 22 year old mother who confessed to dumping her 11 week old baby Halden Fink into a creek after an argument with her husband and father of the child Ervin Fink. Prosecutors may seek the electric chair with the defense considering temporary insanity. The family sought legal help as the mother remains in nervous collapse awaiting arraignment. Collins Enters Not Guilty Plea in Betting Ring

John A. Collins of Sheffield Lake appeared in common pleas court and pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with setting up a room for recording wagers. Bond set at $2000, signed by John and Margaret Ferner. Four other indicted men also pleaded not guilty and were released on bond. trials expected to begin next week.

Velma West and Four Escape From Reformatory in Ohio

Velma West age 33 and three other inmates escaped from the Marysville Women's Reformatory after Mrs. West wrote that she wanted a last fling before dying. West, serving life for the hammer murder of her husband, fled with Virginia Brandy Mary Ellen Richards and Florence Sheline, while authorities hunted for them.

United Press reports thirteen people died in Ohio auto accidents over a weekend amid slippery highways and unusual crashes. Victims include a Dayton woman hit by a train and a Mansfield man killed by a culvert impact near Alliance, with several from out of state among the dead.

Rotarians To Hear Cleveland Minister Speaker

Dr Edwin McNeall Poteat pastor of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church in Cleveland will address the Elyria Rotary Club at the Elks Restaurant at noon tomorrow. He spoke last November at the Elyria Community Chest Campaign finale after years as a missionary in China and as an associate professor at the University of Shanghai.

Tornado Kills 16 and Rash of Damage in Anoka Area

National Guardsmen police and volunteers under Gov. Stassen clear debris after a tornado struck Anoka Minnesota and nearby towns. At least 16 dead and more than 200 injured with property losses estimated at 500000 as martial law and a 9 PM curfew govern the catastrophe.

Roads Closed By Flood Waters In Central Ohio

Central Ohio faced widespread flooding after weekend rains. In Delaware the Olentangy river rose to 14 feet with 46 inches of rain in 24 hours, threatening bridges and submerging parts of the Ohio Wesleyan campus. Livestock escaped to safety as a Route 37 bridge near Alexandria collapsed in Licking County.

Two Injured In Accidents In County

In Lorain County over the weekend two persons were seriously hurt while a bicycle rider escaped with only skin abrasions. Frank Johnson of Oberlin Road sustained severe cuts when his auto overturned on Route 113 west of Elyria. Clyde Rekart, 18, of Milan was injured on Route 18 west of Brighton but not believed seriously hurt. A bicycle rider on Murray Ridge Road suffered abrasions after an impact with a car driven by H J Elbert of Elyria. Multiple minor fender benders and hit and run incidents were reported in Elyria, Lorain, and surrounding streets.

Four Escape From Grafton Prison Farm

Four inmates escaped from the honor camp of the Ohio State Reformatory at Grafton and were hunted today. They walked away last night and boarded a freight train toward Cleveland. the escapees are William Copeland 23 Glenn L Minser 23 George Patton 24 and Walter Taylor 21, all sentenced from Cuyahoga or Muskingum counties for robbery or auto theft.

County Budget Commission To Study Financial Situation

The county Budget Commission may be called soon to study the county's finances for the latter half of 1939 amid a noted shortage in funds for county government operations. County Auditor C S Reiser says extra sales tax receipts might barely offset the shortage. Transfers of funds to salary accounts face resistance from Commissioners Davidson and Dunnis, with court action expected this week on a mandamus suit to compel transfer of funds.

John Grant Schreck 71, clerk to Mayor Joseph Q. Petro, is recovering at his home after being released from Elyria Memorial Hospital yesterday. He sustained a fractured left leg when struck by an automobile on June 6 near City Hall.

Three Die In Fire At Roger Williams Manor Apartment

In Cranston Rhode Island on June 19 three people died as flames engulfed the Roger Williams Manor a 20 unit fireproof building. Eddie Healey a 46 year old former vaudeville actor died from burns and a broken skull after leaping from a fourth floor window. William A Booth 82 and his 18 year old wife were recovered eight hours after the blaze. A $250000 fee dispute prompted investigations into the disaster.
