Louise Woodward, once convicted in a child death case and released after 279 days, departs the United States to return to England amid ongoing international coverage.
State audit recommends cutting 119 positions including 61 teachers and closing an elementary school while planning a new high school to replace Elyria High. It cites a $3.4 million expected deficit by month end and warns deficits could reach $20 million in four years. Auditor Jim Petro notes 98 recommendations to save millions.
Elyria officials weigh converting the 120 year old Old City Hall and the Turner Block on Court Street into refurbished City Hall. A 7 p.m. city council briefing will present recommendations from a committee led by former Councilman Jack Baird. Renovation could cost under 2 million versus up to 5 million for a new City Hall, with updates needed to plumbing wiring windows and structure. The plan preserves historic integrity and links the buildings with an atrium, reducing Broad Street office space.
FirstMerit Bank will close 12 Premier Bank and five PremierBank branches after acquiring Premier Bank. Closures mainly occur the weekend of Sept 5 with Dixie Vinez stating accounts will be moved to nearby FirstMerit offices.
A list of bank office locations across Ohio shows Premier Bank operating in Cleveland Elyria North Olmsted North Ridgeville Lorain Wellington Vermilion and other communities. Addresses include 86000 Detroit Rd 200 Public Square 124 Middle Ave 1000 N Abbe Rd and 4700 Great Northern Blvd among others.
Lorain councilman Vin son Shipley was cleared of driving under suspension after proving a clerical error caused his license loss. Police data showed a suspended license, but a Bureau of Motor Vehicles letter and a judge settlement revealed the issue dated to a prior speeding stop and missing insurance proof, not current suspension.
Elyria based Spitzer family known for car dealerships and real estate has joined the Bart Wolstein led bid to buy the Cleveland Browns. Spitzer says the goal is to keep the franchise locally owned and notes uncertainties about price and cash flow in valuing the bid. He has forms for a solo bid but emphasizes evaluating all revenue streams to determine a reasonable offer.
Grafton officials issue a Monday deadline for state legislators to schedule a hearing on a proposed $25 million 500 bed prison for drunken drivers run by a private company. Mayor Shaun Kerner says the village seeks its side of the story and may seek an injunction if no hearing is set.
