Ohio lawmakers forecast a state income tax cut of at least 8 percent next April due to a growing surplus. The plan could reach 8.5 percent if the surplus hits $600 million, with potential for a 9 percent cut. A family of four earning 40,000 would save about 131 this year and 1995 levels show prior bills reduced taxes.
A 40 year old woman in Orlando gave birth to a boy Tuesday while thousands watched online. The so called first Internet birth faced disputes over the claim as viewers peaked around 5 000 due to a traffic jam. Cameras were discreet and did not show graphic delivery. Elizabeth, the mother, preferred to be identified by first name only.
Avon lawyer Gerald Phillips seeks 28,831.25 in legal fees for work on a proposed charter amendment tied to a May 5 election. The measure would have required voter input on development and zoning changes. Ohio Supreme Court on April 16 ordered expediting the decision and reimbursing Phillips for reasonable fees.
Elyria Mayor Michael Keys will field a public poll at Cascade Park during the July 4 fireworks. Voters previously rejected a 0.5 percent income tax renewal and council weighs whether to make it permanent or renew it as a five year levy. The poll aims to gauge resident preference only on the tax.
Elyria reports the county will pay 5,000 to defend Jonathan Rosenbaum in a defamation suit filed by a former Chronicle Telegram columnist and to represent the assistant prosecutor in a counterclaim against the columnist and newspaper. Insurance covers most costs. out-of-pocket is the general fund deductible.
462 workers at General Motors Parma Stamping Plant were laid off as United Auto Workers strikes against GM continued. Larry Tanner, sheltering at home, said meeting reports indicated the plant would be cleaned out by week’s end and many were excused from work. Mary Irby, GM Metal Forming Division, confirmed the layoffs.
