FOP defies mayor by halting police ball ticket sales
Elyria Lodge 30 of the Fraternal Order of Police defies Mayor Reichlin by continuing telephone sales for its policemen's ball. Police Chief Flood claimed the mayor's order as an executive directive while insisting he had not ordered a halt. Ptl. Larry Witt said the FOP contract limits him from stopping sales and accused the mayor of harassment aimed at destroying the FOP. The move follows complaints of impersonation by ticket- sellers linked to Star Productions, and concern raised by the Elyria Area Chamber of Commerce.

Glad to escape death ends plea in Ohio murder case
NORWALK Mark Schwiefert confessed killer of Ken Shaw said from a Huron County jail that he accepted a plea bargain for a shorter sentence rather than risk the electric chair at trial. He pleaded guilty to stabbing Shaw after being picked up while hitchhiking on Rt. 20 near Angola. Schwiefert, a former Monroeville area resident, described the incident and his flight from Florida to Ohio, where he awaited transfer to state prison. He maintained he killed Shaw and called the deal fair, noting he would rather serve 15 years than die.

Malpractice bill backed by Elyria area reps
In a largely party line move the Ohio House, 92 to 2, approved a medical malpractice insurance reform bill and sent it to the Senate. State Rep. Ethel Swanbeck of Huron cited personal family ties to doctors and insurers as she weighed the bill. Rep. Scribner Fauver said the measure addresses short term insurance access but may not cut premiums as hoped. Minority leaders Norris and Jaskulski voted against the plan.
