Sargo Sub Explodes and Floods After Torpedo Room Fire
The nuclear submarine Sargo suffered a fire and explosion at Pearl Harbor after a high pressure line leak in the after torpedo room. Navy crews submerged the stern to flood the burning compartment and later towed the vessel away, with two crewmen unaccounted for and officials saying reactor rooms remained safe. The sub is expected to be dry-docked for repairs with no determined damage estimate.

Santiago Cuba UPI Capt Manuel Beaton and two men convicted of aiding his overthrow attempt were executed by firing squad at dawn. Beaton Cipriano Beaton and Felipe Martinez Norma were shot at 5 15 a m near San Juan after a five man tribunal found them guilty of high treason murder and armed revolt. They were attended by four priests until death. Five other alleged rebels received prison terms and seven teenagers were sent to reform school awaiting trial.
