Veterans preference clouds civil service reform debate
A perfect civil service exam score by a woman for an air traffic controller post was undermined by veteran point bonuses, dropping her to 167th. Civil Service Commission chair Alan Campbell noted this happens regularly, as veterans gain lifetime federal job preference. The Senate committee rejected proposals to cut veteran preference, opting to form a joint task force with Veterans Affairs to study the issue and report by year end, warning reforms could collapse under veteran opposition.

Suspect known as quiet tenant linked to car by police
Police traced the red Chevelle to Yanasak after a tenant was described as “all right” in a parking lot. Neighbors offered mixed views of Yanasak, saying he was quiet and lived alone at a small rented home near Pearl Road east of Brunswick Hills. Mrs Smith was abducted at Conley Shopping Plaza on Pearl Road. Yanasak, a construction worker for a Strongsville contractor, would only say the employer was “Frank.” The murder weapon, a knife, remains unfound after metal detector searches at the body site.
