A wave of at least 12 mailed bombs prompted a national alert after one exploded at Merrill Lynch in New York injuring four. Extortion letters threatened executives and demanded payment. Bomb found at Findlay defused without injury
A letter bomb mailed to Marathon Oil Co headquarters in Findlay was found before it exploded. Marathon official Bill Ryder said the device included a battery, matchbox, powder and wires and was detected by mail screening procedures. A Lima bomb squad defused the device at about 9 am.
