Elyria residents will see a nine week playground program begin this Monday. Other notes include a report that Elyria family incomes and expenditures in 1956 exceeded national averages and a spur railroad proposal expected to stir controversy at the Lorain plant.
With hours left before a Black River Township trustees meeting petition bearers hurriedly recanvass the township to reach 125 signatures on a corrected petition. Civil leaders aim to file a request for a special election to decide whether the unincorporated area remains separate from Lorain.

In Washington on Friday Senators Bricker and Lausche of Ohio split their votes on President Eisenhower’s foreign aid bill. Lausche supported the measure while Bricker opposed it. the bill passed 57 to 25. Both lawmakers helped defeat two amendments cutting the program by 500 million and 100 million dollars and also defeating an amendment requiring administration updates to Congress about actions under the act.
Police checked alibis of four men released after initial reviews while a new suspect, a car hop at a local drive in, faced questioning. A photographer living near Mary’s home was arrested for indecent exposure as investigators probe her death found near Ecorse Township. The girl’s mutilated body was found two miles from home as authorities pursue many tips.
The Senate approved a foreign aid bill by 37 to 25, authorizing 2.627 billion dollars in aid, defense and technical programs, with four minor changes. President Eisenhower and Secretary Dulles praised the action as House action looms and possible budget cuts threaten later appropriations.
Soviet proposals to permit international monitoring posts on Russian soil were presented by Valerian Zorin at the United Nations Disarmament Subcommission. The plan calls for a two to three year ban on all nuclear tests with observers in Russia the United States Britain and the Pacific area to enforce compliance. Western officials call the move an important advance but say it does not match Western demands to halt production of fissionable material.
Donald C. Rarick and about a dozen members of his dues protest committee urged the Senate Labor and Public Welfare Committee to investigate the United Steelworkers. Rarick, defeated for union president, said they want safeguards for free elections and an end to corruption and threats linked to local and international union officials.
The Illinois Grain Corp dedicates a 6.5 million bushel grain elevator at Lake Calumet as part of the Chicago Regional Port District. Built with a 24 million port bond, two elevators will serve ocean shipments. Illinois Grain Corp is leased for 40 years. Seaway opening remains two years away.
John Ledney Jr. 15, of near Wartford, drowned Friday night in Higley Lake one mile north of Warren. It was the first drowning of the year in Trumbull county.
Eight victims of the Andover blast file civil suits in Cuyahoga county seeking 1 020 000 from ten defendants and Andover village. Plaintiffs accuse leaking gasoline caused the Aug 16 1955 explosion that killed 22 and injured many.
Cleveland Heights wins right to enforce blue laws by closing liquor establishments at midnight on Sundays. Common Pleas Judge Charles W. White refused an injunction sought by three taverns challenging the rule.
Federal Judge James C. Connell barred a walkout by about 800 Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers members in the Nickel Plate system. A hearing was set and negotiations were ordered to resume Monday over working conditions, not wages, with protests planned in Cleveland Chicago Buffalo St Louis Indianapolis and other cities.
Three young Canadian men were fatally injured in a head-on collision two miles north of Bellefontaine on Route 68 Friday night. Harold E. Atkinson, 23, and his brother F. A. Atkinson, about 22, from Willowdale Ontario, and Dwight G. Worley, 24, of Toronto, were identified as victims.
The Ohio Turnpike Commission reported a 300000 May profit after costs and interest, with total income 1483804 versus 1121442 a year earlier. Passenger auto traffic rose by 108000 despite a 16 percent toll increase, and a special meeting was set to discuss a new operator for six eastern restaurants amid crime complaints.
Severe thunderstorms and a tornado caused multiple fatalities and widespread damage across Illinois Michigan and Wisconsin. The Springfield tornado killed three people and injured others while destroying or damaging hundreds of homes and causing flooding in St Louis and nearby areas.
Nine people died when a LOT Ilyushin 14 crashed near Moscow during a thunderstorm. Among the dead were Mr and Mrs Harvey Beaker from Grand Rapids Michigan. Survivors include Mrs Margaret Tremper their 12 year old daughter Mitchell and Dick Cheverton WOOD news director. Cheverton was in Moscow to cover a Grand Rapids tour group.
A 32 year old woman, Elaine D. Hartman of 2245 Bradley Rd, died after her car was struck by a northbound vehicle while turning into her driveway in Westlake. Kenneth Lucas, 21, of 30395 Detroit Rd, was taken to Fairview Park Hospital in fair condition with possible fractures. Coroner says internal abdominal injuries caused death. Police investigate with village solicitor to be consulted today. Funeral plans incomplete.
