CIO May Ask Idle Pay Bill Referendum

Elyria union official says the Ohio CIO will bring its unemployment benefits proposal to voters if the legislature does not act before adjournment on June 23. The Senate sent the bill back to committee, signaling a test of a guaranteed annual wage contract. The measure would raise benefits from 30 to 33 dollars weekly for 26 weeks, while the CIO backed bill requests 50 dollars weekly for 39 weeks. C Franklin Carr of the UAW said plans exist to seek an initiated bill on the November ballot if the current effort dies, aiming for benefits similar to the 50 dollar proposal. Local CIO groups had circulated petitions urging legislative action. The Senate move marked the first real attempt to reform Ohio unemployment compensation to align with Ford and General Motors contracts, though questions remain about funding without reducing current state benefits.
