Seismometers could extend tornado detection efforts
Ohio researcher and Bowling Green State University's geology professor Robert Vincent says earthquake monitors may improve tornado path tracking and warnings. A network of 16 stations since January 1999 aided by seismometer data from Cincinnati Columbus and Portsmouth links ground vibrations to tornado timing. Weather officials and storm researchers note seismometers could supplement Doppler radar and spotters, especially at night, with costs estimated under 5000 dollars per station.
