Film star Paul Newman and Robert Dyson of Poughkeepsie were uninjured after their Datsun 510s collided at the start of a Cumberland National B-Sedan race at Nelson Ledges. Dyson moved to center crowding Newman, a barrier sent Dyson airborne and into Newman's car. Dyson said he aimed to challenge leaders and tried to squeeze through the gap.
PETROL Tenn UPI James Earl Ray the confessed assassin of Martin Luther King Jr was tracked down by bloodhounds and captured before dawn by a posse of law men. Ray exhausted from the ordeal gave a brief reply to guards then was returned to prison after a breakfast in infirmary.
Fisher-Fazio and Meyer Goldberg supermarkets cut prices on thousands of items as Pick-N-Pay slashes 5000 items and discontinues store coupons. Kroger’s vows to be undersold while A&P delays action, with sales execs meeting in Mapie Heights to coordinate. Weather looks cloudy tonight and tomorrow with mild highs and small rain chances. A separate report notes Ray’s capture near a gold mining camp after a prison breakout in Tennessee, with remaining fugitive Douglas Shelton at large and guard plans scaled back.
Nairobi Kenya reports a British born businessman named Bob Scanlon, arrested in Uganda on espionage charges, may have been shot and his body burned, though Ugandan officials deny any death. Radio Uganda had said Scanlon, who became a Ugandan citizen, would face a military tribunal and possible firing squad, with no restitution promised to his wife Gloria.
Gov. Ray Blanton said there was some laxity by prison officials in the escape of James Earl Ray but blamed a federal court order that prevented prolonged solitary confinement. He noted the order required Ray to be treated like other murderers and, without it, Ray might still be free.
